LOCATION:

The courses are held in the surroundings of vineyards and olive trees, in the countryside of Calvi dell'Umbria - a small medieval hilltop village - half an hour north of Rome.

You will stay in a first class accomodation; called
'Vista sull'Oliveto'.

This agriturismo, a small countryhouse hotel in Italian, is situated near the village of Calvi dell'Umbria.

Accomodations are based on arrival on Saturday and departure on the next Saturday (7 nights, including breakfast), 2 persons per room. If you do not want to share your room with another participant, single rooms are available on request.

The painting lessons will be given on the portico ( a big veranda with stunning views) unless the weather forces us to go inside, in which case we will paint in our casale on the Passatore, close to the agriturismo.

... and of course - besides the painting lessons - we will indulge you with everything good Italy has to offer: You can use the large "infinity-edge" swimming pool. During the 5 days of painting, a mouthwatering lunch is included. Also you can taste the wines, the olive-oil of the house, the cheeses of the Umbrian region. Do go and visit Todi, the Duomo of Orvieto, or immerse yourself in the eternal city of Rome...

ABOUT THE ARTIST

On August 3rd, 1961 I was born in the city of Leiden, in the Netherlands.

Growing up in a country with numerous museums, with a pride in its cultural heritage, and by coincidence in the birth-town of one of its most famous painters; Rembrandt, meant that ´´ fine arts ´´ seemed to be a natural part of my life.

As a child, and during my adult life, the paint-brush and pencil were never far away. When the opportunity came to study with some of the best teachers in traditional oilpainting I seized it with both hands.

In these master classes I learned the techniques of the old Dutch masters, many of them date back to the 17th century, what we call our ´´Golden Age´´ when the arts reached an unequalled high.

Now, in this tradition I continue to work: using the old methods, and with much patience and dedicated love, these pictures are painted.

In 2007 I went to Florence, to study the Italian painting-techniques. Here in beautiful Italy, the cradle of art and civilisation, we still learn from old masters from the 16th and 17th century. Moreover, both the masters of Holland and Italy in those days have been travelling to each others country to observe and learn!

I use different methods in a painting. Never a single method, but rather partially applied or a mix of techniques, whenever the painting demands it. Life is never rigid, a painting isn’t either. Nevertheless, all the traditional painting techniques do have one thing in common: there is always an ´´underpainting´´, or ´´prematura´´ in Ialian. This is the very soul of the painting, for there the image is born.

Below a few paintings are shown in different stages of glazing
